Rare Opalescent Gem Ammonite Fossil

An example of one of the most spectacular fossils in the world. A large and fantastically vibrant ammonite, Placenticeras costatum, from the famous Bearpaw formation. Dating to the late Cretaceous period, around 75 million years before present.

The surface of this long extinct marine creature is covered in brilliant blues, greens and purples, with flickers of orange; the colours changing with the light. The dazzling effect is a natural result of the fossilisation process, a unique phenomenon only found on ammonites recovered from this one site.

A large, beautifully preserved example with natural colour and an original surface. A spectacular display piece.
