Superb Ancient Celtic Silver Audoleonmonogramm Tetradrachm Coin - 150 BC

An excellent example of abstract Celtic artwork on a coin. A silver tetradrachm minted by the Danubian Celts, circa 2nd Century BC. 

The obverse with a remarkable portrait of Zeus, in wonderful devolved Celtic style. The deity is portrayed with a bushy beard and long, curling moustache, his hair bound by a large laurel wreath. 

The reverse with warrior on horseback, Audoleon monogram below.

 

Stamped with highly stylised images, this chunky silver coin is inspired by the famous tetradrachms of King Philip II of Macedon. The artist who created the dies for this coin has taken the iconic imagery of Philip's coinage and reinterpreted it, giving it a more dynamic, lively and wonderfully Celtic twist.
