Islamic Splashed Ware bowl

An ancient Islamic Splashed ware ceramic bowl, dating to approximately 900 AD.

The vessel of buff earthenware, coated with a cream slip (or undercoat) and then "splashed" with green decoration.  The decoration consisting of three vertical lines in the centre, with scroll work surrounding.  The rim of the vessel painted with circumferential line, applied in excess to create a dripping effect on he interior.

These so-called Splashed ware bowls are believed to have been influenced by contemporary Sancai ware ceramics from Tang Dynasty China.  For an account of these vessels, as well as a discussion on their influence, see Geza Feharvari, Ceramics of the Islamic World1.

Height: 2 7/8 inches.

Condition: Restored from fragments with some overpainting.

Provenance: London Art Market 1990's.
