An Ancient Roman Gold decorated turquoise stone ring, dating to approximately 200 AD.

The ring with Filigree decoration around the bezel, which houses a deep blue hard-stone intaglio, decorated with etched motif.  The band of simple form, tapering from the bezel to its narrowest point at the base.

Filigree decoration was one of the most impressive techniques employed by Ancient Jewelers.  This ring uses the so-called "Beaded Wire" filigree technique, which involved rolling a single edged implement across the wire at an oblique angle, resulting in a "Screw Thread"1.  This "Spiral Beaded" wire was first developed by the Etruscans in the 7th Century BC.  For an excellent account of Filigree work see the book referenced below, which contains many microscopic illustrations and drawings explaining the technique used to produce this decoration.
