Exceptional Aesthetic Meteorite

Around 50,000 years ago, a 160 foot wide piece of iron shattered off an asteroid between Mars and Jupiter and hurled 8 miles a second towards the Earth, forming a huge impact crater at Canyon Diablo in north-central Arizona.

Fragments of this extra-terrestrial iron were found by native Americans and later studied and collected by the pioneers of Meteoritics, who recognised the still visible crater (the Barrigner Crater) as the first known meteorite impact crater.

This wonderful scarred and broken 4.6 kg lump of octahedrite iron forms part of this famous meteorite and was collected by 'the father of meteoritics' himself, H.H. Nininger.
