Neolithic Niger Green Jasper Disc - 7,000 years BP

A beautiful Neolithic green jasper sun disc scraper from the Tenerian Culture of West Africa, dating to around 7,000 years before present.

Worked with incredible precision, pressure flaked from a dark green piece of veined jasper.

It must have taken a great deal of skill and time to work this delicate piece of stone into such a precise and slender form. A cutting or scraping tool could of course be created from a far less complex design. Thus, this artefact was presumably used as more than a mere functional tool, perhaps a votive offering or object for ceremonial use.
