Fragment of the Famous Murchison Meteorite. Specimen H.126.34 of the famous Murchison meteorite, an observed impact from Victoria, south-eastern Australia. On the morning of September 28th 1969 there was an explosion over the small town of Murchison and the surrounding countryside was peppered with extra terrestrial stones. The meteorites were quickly collected and taken for examination, with shocking results. The samples were rich in organic compounds, containing over 15 different amino acids, the building blocks of life. The Murchison has become the most studied of all meteorites and a source of fascination for those concerned with the origins of life. It is possible that life on earth (and perhaps other planets) was seeded by a similar impact event.
