An Ancient Gandharan schist-stone head of a female deity, dating to approximately 200 AD.
A very attractive, sensitively carved sculpture depicting a serene, gently smiling deity, her hair swept back and wearing elaborate headdress, her eyes almond shaped. With a striking resemblance to Ancient Greek Kouri figures of the Archaic period, this sculpture betrays the influence of Classical artistic traditions.
Now fragmentary, the sculpture would have originally constituted part of a relief, the meaning of which has now been lost.
Height of head alone: 3 3/4 inches.
Provenance: British private collection.
