A very rare Ancient Greek Campanian Bell Krater, dating to approximately 330 B.C.

The Bell Krater, a vessel used by the ancient Greeks for mixing wine and water, is of typical form.  The tiered base with short stem, leading to wide bell-shaped body and flaring mouth.  Two loop handles adorn the vessel on either side.

Side A depicts an phylax actor on the right, in the process of changing his mask with an assistant to the left.  The actor wears soled shoes, tight fitting leggings, baggy tunic with side pocket and mock phallus.  In his right hand he holds out a grotesque comic mask as he inspects another mask, perhaps depicting a pseudokore, held by his assistant.  A third mask lies superiorly.

Side B depicts a 'lady of fashion' (a generic character on South Italian vases), wearing himation and holding a phiale (offering plate) in her left hand and wreath in her right.  She stands next to a funerary stele and is likely making an offering in honor of the deceased.

The sides of the vessel are decorated with palmettes and tendrils with wave decoration below and olive branch decoration on the underside of the rim.

Scenes depicting actors are very rare on Greek south Italian wares and pieces such as this seldom appear on the art market.  The ancient artist was likely inspired by contemporary Athenian middle/new comedy.

Unusual graffito, etched into the glaze after firing, adorns the inner surface of the mouth.

Height: 15 inches.

Condition: Good overall with minor retouching to the paintwork in places.  Restored from large sections.

Provenance: Ex. British private collection.  Ex. London Art Market 1980's.
