Banded Iron Trace Fossil Formation

A huge banded iron formation from Port Hedland, Western Australia, formed around 2.9 billion years ago.

Banded iron formations provide evidence of the earliest life on earth; simple, single celled bacteria inhabiting our primitive oceans. The oxygen produced by these bacteria mixed with iron, creating iron oxides which were deposited on the ocean floor. Over hundreds of millions of years, these iron oxides have here transformed into undulating layers of deep red jasper, shimmering hematite and vivid tiger's eye.

An unusually large and vibrant example.
