Rare Ancient European Neolithic Stone Age Vinča Culture Vessel - 4500 BC. A rare Neolithic Vinča Culture terracotta vessel, dating to circa the 5th Millennium BC. The large, squat vessel sits on a flat base, with wide body, curving at the shoulders and with a short vertical neck, built up on one side to resemble a spout. Two strap handles adorn either side. The whole vessel profusely decorated with incisions, some of which appear to be lime-filled. The underside decorated with heart-shaped motif, the shoulders with a geometric meander decoration and the neck with inverted hook design. This thick walled vessel has a wonderful tactile quality. Most of the decoration is formed from a pattern of tiny wedges, delicately incised using a reed or similar punch against the soft clay, prior to firing. A most unusual and large Neolithic vessel.
