Ancient Near Eastern Bronze Age Dagger with Inscription - 1200 BC

An ancient Near Eastern bronze dagger with inscription on the lower blade, dating to around 1200 - 1000 BC.

The form is typical of the short daggers carried by the warriors of the ancient Near East, cast in one piece, with fanned pommel and recessed hilt which would have been decorated with bone inlays. The blade sleek and uniform.

Yet look closer and the true significance of this remarkable artefact emerges, a tiny series of characters are inscribed on the base of the blade. As yet undeciphered, they may name the owner of the weapon or possibly the god to whom it was being offered. Whatever the message, it offers a momentary glimpse into the thoughts of an individual over 3,000 years ago.
