Medieval Bronze Heraldic Horse Pendant / Livery Badge - 1380 AD

An extremely rare, large and well preserved medieval heraldic pendant or livery, likely Italian and dating to 1380 – 1440.

This magnificent pendant would either have been fitted to the harness of a horse or around the collar of a man in the service of a great household. Remnants of the original green enamelling still remain. These pendants most often show the heraldic badge or coat of arms of the lord in question, yet this example appears to be something different entirely. It shows a scene of courtly love, a king enjoying the sport of hawking with his lady, a pastime which could only be afforded by the wealthiest.

Scenes of religious devotion are common from the Middle Ages, yet depictions of a purely secular nature are far rarer. This is one of the most magnificent Heraldic pendants we have seen.
