Rare Ancient European Neolithic Stone Age Vinča Culture Vessel - 4500 BC

A rare Neolithic Vinča Culture terracotta vessel, dating to circa the 5th Millennium BC.

The vessel sits on a rounded base, with voluminous body, wide neck and two handles, positioned bilaterally. The whole vessel profusely decorated with incisions, some of which appear to be lime-filled. The decoration seems to imitate basketwork and there are anthropomorphic elements on both sides.

This thick walled vessel has a wonderful tactile quality. Most of the decoration is formed from a pattern of tiny wedges, delicately incised using a reed or similar punch against the soft clay, prior to firing. A most unusual and large Neolithic vessel.
