Rare Ancient Egyptian Middle Kingdom Serpentine Stone Shabti - 1750 BC

A rare Middle Kingdom serpentine shabti, dating to Dynasty XIII, 1750 BC. Far rarer than shabtis of later periods, this is a fine example of the Middle Kingdom style; with heavy wig, prominent ears and emphasis placed on the over-large hands.

Small statuettes such as this were believed to be imbued with magic, and were intended to come to life and work on behalf of their owner in the next world. This figure represents the beginnings of that tradition, one that would run for well over 1000 years.
