Song Dynasty Head of a Lohan Buddha

An exceptionally well modelled Chinese Song Dynasty sculpture of a Lohan, dating to 960-1279 AD.

The stucco head depicts a Lohan, a Buddhist attendant, with deeply furrowed brow, full lips, parted and revealing crooked teeth, deep dimples and heavily lidded eyes. His face is covered in fleshy pigment, his lips red, his eyes inlaid with glass giving an uncanny sense of life to the piece.

One of the most naturalistic and powerful Song dynasty sculptures we have seen. The head has been modeled to perfection, the ancient artist delighting in depicting the plump, smiling lohan.
