Greek Gold Brooch - 550 BC

A solid gold Greek brooch, dating to the 6th Century BC.

A most unusual brooch-like fastener, which likely functioned as a button in antiquity, drawing together two perforated pieces of fabric by means of the s-shaped loop at the back.

The heavy, solid gold piece has a wonderful smooth and symmetrical quality, with the upper portion divided into three strands, each with a hollow button terminal expertly and almost invisibly fixed by the ancient goldsmith. The back of the upper section is decorated with incised lines and dots.

A rare and incredibly well made piece of ancient Greek jewelry.
