Ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty Merchant Figure - 618 AD

An ancient Chinese Tang dynasty terracotta Jewish/Persian merchant, of striking style, dating to 618 – 907 AD.

Shown standing on an integral plinth, wearing a thick overcoat, the left arm held by the side, the right pressed close to the chest. Bearded and with a bushy moustache and broad nose, he is shown with the features of a foreigner, possibly one of the Semitic merchants who plied the routes of the Silk Road.

Tang Dynasty China was a cosmopolitan Empire and the Tang Chinese appear to have been fascinated by the foreigners they came into contact with. Rarely they depicted them in ceramic form such as this, perhaps intended to show that the owner was a person of wealth and taste, dealing with merchants who brought him/her exotic goods from across the world.
