Celtic Silver Abstract Philip Tetradrachm - 3rd Century BC

A silver tetradrachm minted by an unknown Celtic tribe, Northeastern Hungary, circa 3rd century BC.

The front of the coin with the head of the Greek god Zeus, in wonderfully abstracted Celtic style.

The back with horse and rider, wearing a headdress or helmet, a trident monogram in the upper left field and a pseudo inscription in front.

The images on this coin were taken from Greek tetradrachms issued by Philip II of Macedon. Here, those Classical forms have been reimagined and transformed with unmistakably flamboyant Celtic style.
