Rare Stone of Emesa Denarius of Emperor Elagabalus - 218 AD

A rare silver denarius issued at the Antiochia mint under Emperor Elagabalus, circa 218 - 219 AD. 

The obverse with a youthful Elagablus, wearing laurel wreath and drapery. The legend reading:

ANTONINVS PIVS FEL AVG

"Antoninus Dutiful Happy Augustus"

The reverse with four horses pulling a chariot which bears the holy stone of Emesa, surmounted by an eagle and protected by four parasols. The legend reading:

SANCTO DEI SOLI

"The Sacred Sun God"

A fascinating type depicting the mysterious stone of Emesa; a meteorite worshiped at the temple of Emesa, brought to Rome upon the accesion of Elagabalus.
