Ancient Roman Silver Denarius Coin of Emperor Augustus - 21 BC

A fine style, well provenanced Roman denarius minted under Emperor Augustus (Imperator Caesar Divi Filius Augustus). Struck at the Samos mint, circa 21 - 20 BC.

The obverse with a delicate, naturalistic portrait of Augustus. The legend reading:

CAESAR

"Caesar "

The reverse with a proud bull, standing foursquare, its head raised. The legend reading:

AVGVSTVS

"Augustus"

 

This is one of the first coins issued by Augustus bearing his new name. It is arguably one of the most attractive early Imperial coins and boasts a wonderfully artistic reverse.

A superb example of a highly desirable coin, free from the usual flan cracks which plague this issue, deeply toned and with an impressive pedigree.
