Fragment of a Life-size Roman Bronze Statue - 170 AD

A fragment from a life-size Roman bronze statue, dating to the late 2nd Century AD.

Finely modelled with deep set eye, heavy lids and large pupil. Framed by a sweeping brow, curls of hair falling onto the forehead and cheek.

There is enough character in this small fragment that it at once recalls the iconic portrait heads of the great Emperor Marcus Aurelius. For comparison, see a larger fragment on the 1st floor of the Sully wing in the Louvre, room 32.
