Life-size Roman Bronze Horse Leg - 100 AD

A life-size Roman bronze horse foot, dating to the 1st - 2nd century AD.

Exquisitely rendered; hollow cast, showing the hoof, with tufts of hair above, parted at the centre. The hoof extended at the fetlock joint, visible as a slight bulge on the surface, with a further tuft of hair at the back. The anatomy of the horse’s foot is displayed with great realism here, with veins, bony protuberances and hair all masterfully executed.

Though it is not certain, the extension of the hoof and outwardly angled lower foot suggest that this may have once belonged to the right rear, weight bearing leg of a rearing or striding horse.
