Silver Lifetime Issue Alexander the Great Tetradrachm - 325 BC. A superb lifetime issue Alexander tetradrachm, from the collection of the famous Brazilian art collector, Raymundo Ottoni de Castro Maya (1894 - 1968). A highly desirable example from the Babylon mint, struck during Alexander's lifetime, circa 325 - 323 BC. The obverse with a fine style, high relief portrait of the demigod, Herakles. The deity is shown wearing the skin of the Nemean lion, its jaws around his ear, its paws tied around his neck, the thick curls of his hair bursting out from underneath. The reverse with Zeus, sitting on an elaborate throne, bare chested but with drapery wrapped around his lower half, he rests his left hand on a tall sceptre and holds out an eagle in his right. A tiny figure of Artemis, striding to the right and carrying a long torch, by Zeus' foot and monograms below the throne. The inscription reading: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ AΛEΞANΔPOY "Of King Alexander" Boldly struck in high relief, deeply toned and with a magnificent, three dimensional, fine style representation of Zeus. A fantastic example of one of the most desirable ancient coins with a wonderful pedigree.
