Silver Griffin Stater from Teos - 510 BC. An archaic silver stater from Teos, Ionia, issued circa 510 BC. The obverse with the king of beasts and guardian of treasures, the Griffin; a mythological creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. The monster is shown seated, with one foot raised, its beak wide open as if screaming. A bunch of grapes and vine leaf below. The reverse with the typical incuse punch of the earliest coins, used to show the pure metal content. A fine example of archaic Greek art.
