Silver Tetradrachm of Ptolemy I - 300 BC

Silver tetradrachm from the collection of Hermann Vogel (1841 - 1917). Issued by Ptolemy I Soter (Saviour), circa 300 - 285 BC, Alexandria mint.

The obverse with the head of Ptolemy, in bold Hellenistic style; the wild curls of his hair bursting out from under a royal diadem. Signed, behind the ear, by the Delta artist.

The reverse with a powerful eagle, standing left, gripping a thunderbolt in its talons. The inscription reading:

ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ

"Of King Ptolemy"

Ρ above monogram of ΠΑΡ. 

This coin marks an important step in the development of Royal portraiture; it is the first to bear a contemporary image of a living King.
