Ancient Greek Cypriot Geometric Terracotta Vessel - 950 BC

A beautifully preserved Cypriot Iron Age vessel from the Geometric period, dating to around 950 - 800 BC.

The vessel stands on a wide disc base, rising into a high bellied body, with sloping shoulders, round mouth with vertical rim and two upturned loop handles. Covered with a cream slip, over which is painted the classic Cypriot geometric decoration in ochre and umber pigments. The patterns comprise wide and narrow bands wrapping around the vessel circumferentially, the upper body with the characteristic geometric circles.

This vessel forms part of one of the most recognisable and decorative art styles from the entire ancient world. Unique to the island of Cyprus, the Cypro-Geometric painted wares were produced during the early stages of the first millennium BC. This example is particularly pleasing, vibrantly painted and well preserved - an object truly emblematic of ancient Cyprus itself.
