Archaic Athens Tetradrachm from the Desneux Collection - 490 BC

A superb example of Archaic Attic coinage, from the collection of the famous numismatist, Jules Desneux. 

An archaic Athens tetradrachm, dating to around 490 BC.

The obverse with a powerful portrait of Athena, in bold archaic style. The goddess is shown wearing a large round earring and crested helmet, her hair falling onto her forehead. 

The reverse with the iconic coat of arms of Athens, the little owl. The bird is shown as a plump little creature, staring out through enormous, round eyes, and olive sprig in the left field.
